Woody’s Hideaway

What is Woody’s Hideaway, I was driving by the other day and spotted this sign? After a little research looks like it is going to be a new bar in Midland. MRT reports that will be owned by the same owners as Little Woodrow’s and will plan to make most of its money from drinks. They are currently hiring waitstaff, visit their Facebook here for more details. They will be located right next to Toro’s Cafe, which is next to the Cinergy Midland.

Candilejas Restaurant Review

CANDILEJAS RESTAURANT

A hidden treasure near downtown Midland, Candilejas Restaurant may not seem remarkable but this little out of sight gem is worth pursuing.

After stopping at two other south side eateries and finding that they were both closed on Mondays; my friend and I ventured to look for Romie’s Restaurant. To our surprise, the famous downtown staple has now been replaced by Candilejas Restaurant. It seems my friend and I need to venture out as we were told Candilejas has now been open for over two years.

We arrived right before noon and walked into an empty dining room. If you have lived in Midland long enough, you would know that us Midlanders love to eat out and most restaurants stay busy. So walking into an empty dining room was both surprising and pleasant.

For starters, we were provided with chips and salsa and decided to splurge an ordered the queso as an appetizer (not pictured). The salsa was a little spicy but tolerable for my friend; I myself don’t mind a little kick and found it delightful. The queso was also pleasant and was made from a white based cheese; which is rarer in these parts.

After reviewing the multi-colored menu, my friend ordered Mona’s Plate while I ordered the Corn Tortillas Flautas. Our food came out quickly and we both concurred that the beans were exceptionally good as was the rice. On her end, my friend really enjoyed the Chile Relleno and I enjoyed the crispy Flautas which were filled with the same Shredded Beef. We both agreed that this was what made our dishes so good.

Overall, our stop at Candilejas was enjoyable. The service was friendly and the food delicious. The only thing we both noticed though was that it was too quiet as there was no music or televisions on while we were there which made it harder to engage in personal conversation.

Wienerschnitzel

There is a story buried deep in Midland folk lore, deeper than any producing zone, farther down the Wolf camp, way past the Sprayberry, it story very seldom told. However most Midlanders know it well and can coaxed into talking about it. *takes deep breath* here we go…. at one time Midland had not one, but two. Wienerschnitzel locations. One as located the corner of Illinois and Midkiff, and other was Loop 250 and Midland drive. For years the places slung out hot dogs, chili dogs, corn dogs, and burgers. Both staples during some really lean years, through late 80’s and into the 90’s they were strongholds and temples built the continued worship of All American Hot Dog. Then one sad day, the roasters and chili pots were turned off and unplugged for good. Bye bye Miss American Pie drove my Chevy to Levy but the Levy was dry. Ok so maybe the music didn’t die, but the hot dog sure did. However on this darkest of days, one small glimmer of hope emerged and it one mustard seed of faith have gotten from day in 1996 this day in 2016. Wienerschnitzel left it sign on Loop 250 standing. It has been right here with us long cold days of winter, and the scorching hot days of summer. It has stood tall and always reminded us, that one day Wienerschnitzel will come back. It was right here with us both of George W. Bush and Barack Obama’s terms. I do feel sorry for lone travelers saw that beacon of hope, exited on Midland drive to find several restaurants, few very deep potholes, but no Wienerschnitzel. Well the wait is almost over, I understand that new Wienerschnitzel is built at 5313 W. Loop 250 N. Will Midlanders give past and let them back into lives? Aren’t scared are 6 months and the take off again? I personally still hurt that they left in first place. It didn’t work in 1996 who thinks it will work in 2016?

New Address – 5313 W. Loop 250 N.

KUO’S Chinese Restaurant

An experience at KUO’S Chinese Restaurant goes like this. I was craving Chinese on Saturday. Which is not uncommon for me? But the Chinese buffets are all the same and I was craving really good Chinese. I knew where to go. My wife suggested dinner and a movie so it became a carry-out night. I called my order in and was greeted on the phone with a smile. Yes, you can hear a smile on the phone. Even if they’re smiling in a second language. I placed my order and left my apartment. Knowing they would need a little time to prepare my meal I stopped at the Red Box on the way. When I arrived at San Miguel Square, the home of Woofers and Tweeters and Torino’s Sports Bar, across from HEB, I was again greeted with a smile. The restaurant itself was very elegant. Asians have a knack for interesting architecture. The tiles on the ceiling were gold and very detailed. There were unique sculptures and paintings to admire. There was even a very comfortable looking couch, in case they got too busy. I didn’t require use of the couch as my meal was ready, boxed up in the neat little cardboard boxes with Chinese buildings printed on them. For under $30 I was in and out and back at home enjoying previews with the still warm food. I had General Tso’s Chicken and my wife had Lemon Chicken. My wife’s meal was presented well. Tasty fried rice with dozens of chunks of breaded chicken presented with slices of lemon and a few red cherries. She also had the pleasure of enjoying two different dipping sauces. My General Tso’s Chicken was excellent! It was spicy, but had a hint of brown sugar to equalize the flavor. We had Eggrolls on the side as well as some of the creamiest Cream Cheese Wontons in Midland. Being a lover of soup I also had a bowl of Won Ton Soup. It was amazing! Definitely not some out of the can quick fix you find in buckets at the buffets. This soup had sliced beef and delicious dumplings in a very refreshing broth. It was overall a very satisfying experience and I recommend KUO’S to all who enjoy Asian food. Review by Mark Caples
